This is the recommended thread for downloading, and posting any questions, suggestions or support queries for OctaneRender for Rhino - TEST and STABLE releases.

SOLUTIONS TO COMMON ISSUES

1) Make sure your NVIDIA drivers are up to date.

2) Make sure you have the latest Rhino Service Release installed.

3) If you get an "Error Starting Octane - Could not load OctaneWrapper?.dll" error when installing the plugin, this is generally due to not having the latest NVIDIA drivers installed (so see Solution 1) above.

4) If you get a "Package not compatible" error when installing the plugin, please follow the instructions at https://wiki.mcneel.com/rhino/5/rhi-problems -> "Package not compatible".

5) If you get an "Unable to load OctaneRenderForRhino.rhp plugin: initialization failed" error when starting the plugin, delete the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\McNeel\Rhinoceros\6.0\Plug-Ins\F109BD23-4CF3-4C0B-9F83-06BE474B0152 and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\McNeel\Rhinoceros\6.0\Plug-Ins\F109BD23-4CF3-4C0B-9F83-06BE474B0152 registry entries using Regedit and then reinstall the plugin. If this does not resolve the problem, delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\McNeel\Rhinoceros from the registry and then reinstall the plugin.

6) If you get an "OctaneRender for Rhino not activated." error when rendering via the Rhino->Render->Render menu, open the plugin Setup window via the OctaneRenderForRhino command, or by adding the plugin panel to the Rhino Properties window as per https://docs.otoy.com/RhinoH/RhinoPlugi ... oceros.htm.

7) Cuda error 999 - failed to load shader code: Multiple definition of 'cpSptStatistics' in 'cuda_teturemode' means that your plugin version is too old for the Nvidia drivers that are installed, so update to the latest version of the plugin

8) The Octane Viewport does not appear after clicking the Open Viewport button. This occurs when the Viewport was previous closed on a second monitor, or off the current screen. To resolve this, delete the plugin configuration file config.xml as per https://docs.otoy.com/RhinoH/RhinoPlugi ... ration.htm.

9) LiveDb materials containing OSL nodes will not load into the plugin correctly. The plugin does not currently support OSL Projection or Texture nodes. Instead, copy these Livedb materials into the clipboard from Octane Standalone and paste them into a NodeGraph material in the plugin.

10) Where is the macOS version? I have done quite a lot of work investigating a macOS version of the plugin for Rhino. Unfortunately the macOS UI that Rhino uses offers far fewer controls than the Windows version, and I don't think it's possible to replicate the tree structure that the plugin uses in Windows. So I think it would require a complete re-write of the plugin in order for it to work on macOS, and I don't think that would be possible in the near future.

11) If when rendering with Octane 2021, the render appears to be using a different color map, set the Kernel->White Light Spectrum to Legacy/Flat to render as per Octane 2020.

12) Rhino locks-up/freezes when loading a .3dm containing Octane data. This is due to the plugin searching through very large (or invalid) folders searching for missing texturemaps. To resolve this, delete the plugin configuration file config.xml as per https://docs.otoy.com/RhinoH/RhinoPlugi ... ration.htm.

Rhino Version
This version requires the latest Rhino 7 or 8 build, on Windows. MacOSX is not currently supported.

Network Rendering
For Network Rendering, you must use the Octane slave release from the Octane Standalone installer which matches the exact Octane version of the plugin you are using.

Hello Paul,

Unfortunately, I’ve been experiencing frequent crashes with the latest version of the Rhino plugin.
Since I hadn’t used Octane for at least eight months prior, I can’t say with certainty whether this instability began with the latest version or if it was already present before.

I haven’t been able to reproduce a consistent crash scenario, but I’m attaching a scene that typically causes the plugin to crash within 6 to 7 minutes when adjusting materials or render settings. In some cases, the crash occurs immediately after opening the Octane viewport.

I’ve now reverted to this version:

OctaneRenderForRhino7_2023_1_3_141_STUDIO

— which appears to be very stable on my system.

I have a feeling that high polygon counts may contribute to the instability, though that’s just a guess for now.
If time permits, I may try installing newer versions incrementally to see when the instability begins on my setup.

Best regards,
Andreas

Hi Andreas

I suspect this might be related to the thumbnail generation in Rhino. Can you please turn off thumbnail generation and tell me if it resolves your issue?

Are you using Rhino7 or Rhino8?

Thanks

Some more info on this....

If the crash reports I have in my inbox are yours, then it is definitely happening when generating the thumbnail. I have tried reproducing the crash using your scene in Rhino8, but cannot get the crash to happen, even when generating large thumbnails.

Is the crash only happening when the Octane Viewport is open, or when it has not been opened yet?

Thanks

Another question...

What do you have the Rhino->Render->Current Renderer set to please?

Thanks

Hi Paul, thanks for looking into this,

as for your questions:

1. I am using normally using Rhino 8, this is where the crashed occurred. this actually brings me to an idea: is it maybe possible to have different octane versions installed for R8 and R7 (or maybe even R9 WIP)?
While this would of course not be 100% comparable, it might help to find out if one octane version is more prone to crash than another...

2. I think all the crashes happened with the octane viewport being open, at least one happened right after opening the viewport. During testing I tried to provoke the crashes by changing the materials with the viewport open, this is where the majority of crashes happened.

3.I have to say, that I also had the suspicion that the thumbnail generation might be the culprit, since they are painfully slow to update anyway, concerning the current render engine, I am not completely sure if I had it turned to octane during the crashes I think I remember having it switched to rhino renderer after installing the old octane version...

Is there maybe an option to turn of thumbnail generation all together? Right now the only option is to have tiny thumbnails, which is what I use, personally I do not need a thumbnail anyway, because I tinker with the materials while watching the result in the octane viewport.

Hi Andreas

I found a timing issue related to the generating of thumbnails and the opening of the OctaneRender viewport. Are you able to try this version please a tell me if it fixes your issue?

2025.2.1.144 - TEST
- Compiled with Octane 2025.2.1
- Potential fix for the crash related to generating Octane material thumbnails

Rhino7/8 Studio -> https://render.otoy.com/customerdownloads/plugins/61/5a/e5/cb/OctaneRenderForRhino7_2025_2_1_144_STUDIO.rhi

Thanks

will do.

I suppose you want me to choose octane as the "current render engine" then, correct?

Hi Andreas

I suggest testing with both renderers, however 'yes', the OctaneRender is the more important one to test.

Thanks
