Is there maybe a way to make the window Plugins > OctaneExport > OctaneExport floating, so that it is still possible to use Cinema 4D underneath?

This will be available with version 0.11.

That would be sweet! Would cut down the clicks to update a scene from 6 in C4D to 1.

For now, you can always use the export + render command, to which you can even assign a short cut. It was was especially added for 1-key updates.

Hm may it would be a nice addition to octane to import FBX instead of OBJ. You can embedd a lot more sceneinformations into FBX than in OBJ. I think it would make plugIn development alot less stressfull than it is now. Or release an API to directly write Octane-Files.

The current export system is certainly not the end of the exporter development. I reckon it was chosen because Refractive wanted a simple interface to get stuff into Octane, which allows the exporter developers to get up to speed vairly quickly and to have them all at a similar level when 1.0 is released.

-> I'm not sure yet, what the future path will be here, as there are several possibilities, but don't worry this is not the final "solution". It's just a first step.

I am satisfied with this system. Once resolved animation, then it would make sense to FBX, COLLADA, etc.
