Mix 2 materials with displacement

You should apply same logic as in mixed materials. Mix your nodes and connect to baking texture and pin to displacement of top mix material.

I'm running into this same problem and not fully understanding the solution, here: I have a mix material that uses a vertex map to determine what goes where. The two materials have different displacements, which I was trying to combine like so:
Disp 1 + Disp 2 > Mix node (vertex map as texture) > baking texture > displacement > mix material .

If vertex maps won't work with displacement, how do I get around this
