I know this has probably been asked but I've searched and cannot find an answer. I can see how fog/volume light works with daylight environment but I'm simply using a hdri environment and 2 octane lights. I do not want both lights to have volume light, just one IES light. How do I apply this in 3dsmax? There is no 'medium' node on the ies light.

Hi darkline,
You can not use a medium node in an IES light at present.
This is a work around:

Please add IES light to work with medium node in future updates, I have seen C4d octane plugin does it, we are hoping you could bring 3dsmax
plugin to the same level as well... :|

Hi Jim99,
Can you kindly share a link or screenshot with IES and integrated medium node in C4D please?

Hi Paride,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tv9j3ki ... e=youtu.be

AT 41:30 he switched light to IES light also added in cloud effect to the medium, looks like done by noise texture.

Cheers

Hi Jim99,
Octane 3dsMax IES lights work exactly the same way (screenshot)
All 3dsMax Octane lights and blackbody / texture emission work with medium volume.

Integrated medium in IES would be something like this:

And this does not even have in C4D for all I know.

Hi Paride,

Could you please upload this demo file in max2016 format? I must be doing something wrong.

Thanks

If used in a moving camera: make the box with the scattering material large and place it just "inside" the camera view (a couple of cm). Link it to the camera and make sure it covers whatever light that will be passing through it. This will get rid of any clipping issues.

One issue I'm having with this volume light technique is the hard and visible noise around the light-sources. Have been playing with most of the settings but even oversampling a lot still gives me way too much noise. Any ideas of how to reduce or smooth this noise in the render (not post) would be greatly appreciated!

BTW, happy new year everyone! :)
