Update 2018 - 03 - 19:

When you start the plugin for the first time make sure the

Surface Material Filter

is left empty when you intend to work with the figure generations of Genesis, Genesis 2, Genesis 3, Genesis 8.

- - -

If you are working with Victoria 4.2 and Michael 4 you may still want to use the entries

cornea, eyesurface, eyebrows

Make sure the Surface Material Filter is empty by default.jpg

I deleted the cornea filter and use a modiefied glass shader. Works best for me as it very nice reflects light and give more life to the eyes.

it's exactly that. you can enter any string, comma, separated, and any surface which name contains this string (case independet) won't render. like the "5_Cornea" surface if you enter "cornea" or "corn" ... since ds4 allows no direct access to bone geometries, they can't be easily hidden from the rendering. using a surface name filter, which uses a special material to hide surfaces, this will be possible at least to some extent.

the defaults are just to show something up but additionally to remove parts seldom used or not very useful in octane, i once made a post about how the daz eye is built - will explain why i defaulted to these parts: viewtopic.php?p=79405#p79405
The obvious is that which is never seen until someone expresses it simply

I have never used this feature, but my best guess is "Yes".

Use it with caution, though, materials filtered here, will never be shown in a specific scene.
All the materials which came as standard values were there to filter out unnecessary materials on Victoria 4-based characters like Eyebrows and such.

Whilst using RedSpec we recommend completely deleting every entry in that box.

It might actually help users if new releases of the plugin would ship without any values set in the surface filter by default.

As TRRazor explained it made sense in 2013 to filter those specific surfaces for the 3d figures most dominantly used at that time.

cornea, eyesurface, eyebrows

But in 2018 having those surfaces filtered by default may confuse new users who work with the latest Genesis 8 figures for which it is important that those surfaces are rendered.

Happy to remove the default as you suggest. However will that break old scenes and figures?
