Hey guys,
I have a pretty odd issue after upgrading to 2019.1.5. Apologies if the post is bit long, I tried to compress it down, but at the same time wanted to be thorough with explaining every step I did so far.
TL;DR: Upgraded from 4.05 R7 to 2019.1.5. everything worked well until random PV rendering crash; now I'm unable to load scenes that worked fine in both V4 and 2019, because Octane crashes C4D during material generation.
Yesterday, I upgraded from V4.05 R7 and got two 2019.1.5 subscriptions. Everything was going flawlessly for several hours - both machines rock solid in both LV and PV.
While rendering a quick preview in PV Octane crashed after few frames on my main workstation. (Standart C4D crash window Plugin Error: "The plugin octane.dll has crashed. More info can be found in 'C:\....\_BugReport.txt'...")
I restarted C4D and loaded the scene again. And the same C4D crash pop-up appeared right away, while the scene was just loading, before I even touched anything. (screenshot attached)
I restarted the whole system and tried again. And the same thing happened. And again, and again - the scene just wouldn't even open now.
Few attempts later I noticed that it tend to crash when "generating material" was in progress for a one specific material. The mat in question is nothing fancy, just universal material with bunch of 4k textures from SP - albedo, metallic, spec, rough and normal channels and theres just one color correction node adjusting one of the maps.
I tried opening backup of the *.c4d file in case it got corrupted after the first PV crash. But the same thing happened even with weeks old version of the scene. I also tried other scenes with this material that I know for absolute sure are working and all of them crashed when generating materials.
That lead me to believe there was something wrong with that one material.
However, after another restart and quick deletion of the material from the scene (before Octane managed to generate it), it started crashing while generating other materials - it seemed to be quite random which.
- one was some super basic gloss mat with just a rough and bump texture from Kitbash3D
- another was gloss metal with bump and rough
- then a Mix mat with dirt and mask combining rust and metal mats
No complex node trees, OSL, baking or native C4D shaders; just bunch of image textures, color corrections and one dirt node.
I simply stopped being able to open any scene contaning certain materials - eventhough the mats worked fine before and work with no issues on my second rig on 2019.1.5.
I double checked all the textures to see if the files happen to be damaged or something, but they are all fine.
I updated to the latest nVidia studio drivers for Titan Xps, but it didn't help.
Other scenes seem to not crash, but the material generation takes ages even with tiny textures. (literally 5+ minutes for mat with two 2k textures)
When I go back to 4.05 the scenes still load fine and everything works pretty much as it used to. (it did start randomly crashing in PV after the driver update)
Whats making this even more confusing is that while all of this has been happening I've been rendering several scenes on my second rig with the newly installed 2019.1.5 for like ~30hrs straight with no issues. (the exact same scenes that are crashing Octane on my main PC when generating mats)
Any idea what could be causing this?
It seems odd that it would be a driver issue, because it was working fine before, until the rendering crashed, and new driver made no difference.
Is it even possible for a driver to crash Octane while merely opening the c4d file?
Could there be some compatibility issues between 4.05 materials and 2019.1.5 on some systems?
I'm quite sure it's not a HW related, as I've been working on the same HW with the same scenes on V4 for months without any hiccups and the scene(s) in question are not particulary heavy, complex or anything (the biggest one is <5m polys and it took around 6-7GB out of 12GBs of vram before the crashes started happening).
I can't share the scene, but the one that started it all is basically just bunch of Kitbash3D buildings scattered on plane, one animated character with PLA baked clothes textured in SP and HDRI+slight fog.
My specs are:
Windows 10
Cinema 4D R18.057
Octane 2019.1.5
nVidia studio driver 441.6
------------
6900k i7
Asus X-99-WS
64GB ram
4x Titan Xp
I attached Bugreport.txt that I got from the crash, not sure if that's any help, but I can't even get any other log, because it crashes C4D instantly.
Thanks for any help! I'm really at the end of my wits here and I desperately need to get it working.

1-Try older drivers.
2-Define is it specific to one scene or not. If not specific to scenes then try other driver also run nvidia driver in debug node.
3-Send the scene if it's specific one.

Thanks for your reply Aoktar! Unfortunately, it's multiple scenes and I can't really share them.aoktar wrote:1-Try older drivers.

I went through all drivers from 419-current and the 2019.1.5 simply won't work - now it even crashed two renderfarm servers to the point I couldn't even conenct to them after trying to render to PV - and I unfortunately don't have the time to troubleshoot it atm.
So I just went back to 4.05 with 419 drivers which seems stable and will try to deal with 2019.1.5 later on, perhaps when new build/drivers come out.
Hi,
the Win 10 version installed is very old: Please upgrade Win 10 to 1903, to work with Nvidia Studio driver 441.66.
ciao Beppe
