Sometimes z-depth renders out as solid white and sometimes it renders out fine. I can't figure out what I'm doing in one file that's making it work/not work.
The really odd thing is that the z-depth shows up looking totally fine in the octane render view.
Here's a file where it renders out the z-depth in the render passes:

and here's the file where it mysteriously renders only white for the z-depth:

Z-depth doesn't always work

It always works but you need to know tonemapped vs linear difference. See end of render passes in manual. There's a video to show usage of zdepth in AE.

It does, if you switch your render to info channels you'll see there is a Z-depth slider, if you increase it it will increase the distance of the z-depth pass. Sometimes (depending on the size of your scene) you'll need 1 but sometimes 50 or even more. Also take into account that on the render settings you must go to octane passes and set that number on the z-depth slider (it's at the bottom) to the same number you've chosen on your kernel settings.
