Hello all,

I am having major difficulties trying to get the shadow catcher to work. Can someone help me sort this out? I want just the text with it's shadow on a separate pass so I can comp them individually. I am putting the text on render layer 2 and activating all the Render Layer options in the multipass settings.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Monty

MontyVFX,

If you're using R19, I believe there is an issue with the current version of C4D and mutilpass not working. (It's noted on the first page of the thread for downloading Octane betas (3.08).

Aoktar mentioned somewhere it had been fixed, but we have to wait for Maxon to release the patch to the public.

If it's an earlier version of C4D, I can't help.

This is a gaping hole in this plugin. Shadow catching is the most basic of functionality that needs to work. I don't understand why a developer would want to release software with such a massive bug. It's destroys the legitimacy of Octane.

What I was pointing out is that this is a Maxon/C4D problem not the fault of the Octane plugin. It has been discussed on the forums in the releases area.

What do you mean "really" with bug or "major difficulties trying to get the shadow catcher to work"? Please explain your problem better.

Hi MontyVFX,
In your original post, you said you have the text on LayerID 2 with render layer enabled.
I downloaded your file, but see that the text is on Render Layer 1 (with all the other elements) and render layer is not enabled.
I moved the text to Layer ID2, enabled Render Layer - Black Shadows, and Render layer mask (ID2), and the results render as you desire.

Do they render or can you actually save them (automatically through picture viewer, all other options are irrelevant when rendering animation)?
I am running C4D19.024 / 3.07 R2 and it works in the LV but you can't save it to a file. EXR creates a channel but it stays black or white, respective of the shadow pass.
