exported from sketchup...design for low-rise multi-family units (actually used one of the 'rejected' designs for this post, as the 'approved' design cant be used here)...
since we use a lot of alpha maps, i had to avoid direct shadows thru the trees- as they cast a 'rectangular' shadow on buildings..
(waiting for octane fix on this...eagerly.. :) )

strangely, when i try 'direct lighting' mode, the window panes (with blackbody property, and 90% transparency)- are actually somewhat transparent (which is preferred)..
But when i use pathtracing, these window panes are solid...

i could use some comments/suggestions on improving this..
i am new to octane btw- and still establishing the workflow (previously on vray for SU)..

Hey,

Nice work. Some comments:

In broad day/sunlight the power of indoor lighting when viewed from the outside is usually much less.
Currently it looks like an empty box/building with a large emitting plane in it.

I'd remove the interior lighting and just add glass to the windows. (and also add some flooring for each level inside the building, so you have a ceiling viewed slightly through the glass windows)

Thanks Radiance.. :) for having a look at this and i appreciate your comments...
i just tried another one, without emitting plane...
(i think there is still a long way to go...and i shud keep learning from this forum :))
though i think changing the background could have helped..hope to do that in the next beta..

these are images with opacity maps... you can find some here- they have a good collection (and for free..)

that's a lot better.
I'd try to add a bit more contrast and a better camera angle,
aswell as making the cars less shiny and enable smoothing on them so you don't see the quad facets :)

Wow! the opacity mapped trees hold surprisingly good. I suppose it depends on the perspective :D

actually while using these opacity mapped trees- you need to ensure their shadow is out of the way- as they cast 'rectangular shadows'...the current beta does not support shadows thru opacity maps... which is the drawback..
:(

but if used carefully, they look pretty okay, and keep the poly count low (in sketchup, they follow the camera angle, so pespective matching is no problem)
thanks for looking..
