1080ti will likely have less RAM. Performance will be close to Titan X, but not all the way. I like having the extra RAM as a failsafe.

I expected 16gb in the new x.

I won't buy this new card because it won't have HBM2 and it will have only 12GB.
But I'll buy new Titan P (Pascal) with HBM2 maybe in 2017 or new Titan Volta.

It would make no sense to release Octane 4 next year.
Not for users, not for Otoy. For nobody.
Usually a production render gets a increase in the "number" every 3 years.
Otherwise it is only bad behaviour and mony making.
Otoy needs to set up a solid V 3.0 family including all Plugins (like Maya and Max) first.
Then give us some new features along Cloud Rendering and ORBX 3 with version 3.1, 3.2 and so on. And don't forget the AMD and CPU support.
And then let us think about V3 in 2 or 3 years.
Everything else is childish and just causes confusion.

It is all about features and stability not numbers.
HBM2 isn't ready yet for produce any videocard until 2017 because new Quadro P6000 will have... only GDDR5X too!?!! lol

Actually as someone who's thinking about upgrading cards I wonder what would be potentially better for octane…
3x GTX 1080 vs 2x Titan X (Pascal)
3x 1080 comes in slightly cheaper. Cuda cores combined roughly the same (1080 slightly more). However 1080 has a higher clock speed where as Titan X has 4gb more ram. Thoughts?

if you do not have and additional dedicated card only for display than go for 3x1080.
Aside from money What people tend to not think is the free left system resources, heat and power usage in using 3x or 2x gpu's.
Also new TitanX has more vram. Which cruical for me to render highres images.
hope it helps
