the problem seems to be almost separate from the lighting, as though the ambient occlusion isn't being multiplied in some fashion, as it seems to only be happening where the objects occlude each other. It's frustrating that this is only happening to me...

The examples posted are at 100 percent and one at 500 percent or so. The scale change is even enough to make the light source almost disappear, the problem persists identically.

Could there be some reason that the software would be working for me when the main program is working perfectly? Perhaps some software corruption during download? (if so it's happening to both the 2.56 and 2.57 versions of the plugin)

But I would like to thank gabrielefx and yourself t_3. It is nice that the I am getting some response :), If some of the dev team to chime in on this and make some suggestions for me to try and help me nail this sucker down, that would be awesome too :P
your box and your sphere are black body emitters....

Sadly no they aren't, just checked on them. the only black body emitter is the light source on the right.

It's the info channel kernel - you select it from the same dropdown where PMC, PT and DL are

The kernel node is connected to a rendertarget node. By default for previewing meshes and materials the 'Mesh Preview RenderTarget' inside the 'Preview configuration' macro is used.

I was hoping to see a faster development of Octane Render... it's so hard to use it for a real production... Actually I only use it for fun :( ... the latest updates are great but... Talking about C4D, the biggest issue is "the camera bug" and the second is the absence of the "batch render button" in background.

We tried Octane a while ago and if it coud be integrated into our render pipeline somehow. There were too many issues and too many features missing. Octane development is just far, far too slow, it was in beta 2 years (?) ago, still is today, and god knows for how long it will be till all the promised features are implemented and it can be used reliably in real productions. Too risky. It's fun as you said, but only for playing around with it.
