Stealthworks wrote:Hmm, that sounded promising but unfortunately it didn't work either :-( I completely uninstalled the NVidia drivers, then enabled the on-board graphics but it still freezes at the "Starting Windows" screen when the GT430 is plugged in. i also tried booting into safe mode (so no drivers are loaded) but in that case it doesn't even get to the boot screen - just the screen where it lists all the core drivers. With the GT 430 unplugged the system boots normally with the on-board graphics enabled.

I've attached a screenshot of my system info (with only the on-board graphics enabled) and its showing an intel chipset for the graphics but there must be another issue somewhere

Many thanks for your help on this anyway.
cheers
this is strange; intel+nvidia combinations normaly work without problems, yet apart from octane. maybe switching pcie slots? (there may be still interrupt issues, even if it is not very common these days)

Unfortunately my mother board only has one PCI-e slot and 3 PCI slots. Maybe I could pick up a cheap PCI graphics card (if they still exist!) and maybe that might work?

ps: i just saw you have an fujitsu siemens pc; those machines have often only one pcie slot, this could be a little problematic ;) another thing: they also have not the most powerful PSUs around (if you haven't swapped it); it is not very likely that the activation of onboard graphic exceeds some limits, but who knows. imo the freeze happens, as soon windows tries to initialize the second graphic device, so it might still be a bios issue - also not very easy to resolve, because bios access on fsc pcs is often very limited; i also don't think reinstalling windows would help... if you can easily do that (without having to reinstall a lot stuff) it is maybe worth a try, otherwise i would not spend the time, as i don't think it'll change something.

a last thing that comes into my mind: you can try a linux live-cd (or bootable usb stick), if this gets it working. at least you will know, if it is a hardware (=bios) or software issue...

ah - you answered while i was typing, so i was right with that. pci might be an option, but i won't bet on it, just because it is a fsc pc and especially because it is a fsc bios ;)

Oh well, it was a nice try. As 3D rendering is just a hobby for me, until my graphics ability becomes good enough to justify buying a better rig, I'm happy enough just using it as as is. The speed of Octane is amazing and just being able to render photo-quality images on the low spec PC I have is more than I could have hoped for.
Thanks again for all your help with this
