As the title says, i am trying to create material for leafs on the rose shrub. Typically, for trees, i am doing it with that diffuse material translucency trick, but on this particular occasion i need the leaf to be glossy, surely you know how the rose leafs look... simply i need the material be both glossy and translucent (what can be done with diffuse mat). Is there a way to do it? Mix materials?

Thanks for answers

yeap in this case I mix a diffuse material with the color or image in the diffuse channel and an specular material with the same image or colour in the transmission channel and play with the reflection value to suit your needs, put a high roughness value to get a fake SSS look, and play with the mix value for more glossy or matte look.

Oh, splendid! Thx for your advice. but...mixing diffuse and specular? Not diffuse and glossy?

well I like it better that way, it pleases more my eye than glossy+specular, but try it yourself, just add another node and link and unlink and see in real-time which fits better your expected result

Since I've done myself some roses for a new entry for the apocalypse contest (they are low poly medium, long distance, so the geometry is not great) this is the texture I've made, hope it helps you I can add the macro if you want, I hadn't texture it yet or test it, I'm in the modeling stage of the whole scene, but I wanted to do a quick test for you or anyone else that might find it useful. The material needs some tweaking and the texture I used to control the mix is just a simple gradient 300x300 so won't be too regular, in the wip you can see the specular setup. Althou this is just a "workaround" for now, with the new build we'll have SSS which is what I'm planning to use as texture, hehehe
Also they are too glossy yet, I've got to level the "control" texture.
For light I've used an HDRI and the tests are rendered in PT in a few minutes (1-2)

hahahahha, well you can forget about what I said yesterday, here is a quick update on SSS and the rose petal material. Same setup but without roughness for the specular material and add a scattering medium to it and play with its values. (and of course don't forget to get the new 2.55 beta  )

Impossible to simulate velvet rose material without fresnel....

If you would model the leave's microstructure you wouldn'd need fresnel at all ;)
