that looks go so far. Maybe you could try to remove the hard edges from the right and left sides of the alpha so that they blend better together.

I tried this once for grass, but it rendered awfully slower than with real geometry...

I used the method for grass too, and it worked fine. I discovered a little trick to avoid seeing a black or white line over the billboards : always keep a row of fully transparent pixels at the bottom of the png image !

It's not perfect but it's not bad.

BTW: Does anybody know about a timetable about the implementation of instances in Octane ?
