Yeah, I am using Octane mostly in direct lighting mode, too.
This is a key strength of Octane.
Instancing will come soon. I really hope the gonna implement SSS, too.
The direct lighting has to be tuned a bit. Then it is all good.

Can't say I'm against in any way, but don't remember using direct lighting for something else than navigating if fps drops really low. Isn't that kind of simulating "any other" rendering engine? Picture is always better with pathtacing. (no, I don't have a box full of GPUs :) )

It is all about options. If you can choose between a sweet rendering in seconds or a brillant rendering in hours what would you choose?
There is no definate answer because it is allways about the circumstances. Deadlines, late modelling changes and the aim to create an animation in hours, not years make DL attractive.
If I have time to render a single frame over night, of course PT or PMC is the better option but for everything else I go with DL.

If I would replace my 4 GTX 460 with 4 GTX 590 it wouldn't matter, but for now I enjoy Direct Lighting ;)

Another key feature DL could have is some colorbleeding a-la renderman... right now the colorless AO makes renders look kinda dull...

Guess I didn't take all problems into account. I do animations, but I rarely do architecture. Pack-shots for instance are much faster in Octane than on CPU in most cases. I wish I had those boxes though :)
