If it does not already exist it would be very useful to have a 'render region' option like you get with Max's MR.

If I was working with a 1280 x 960 render and I want experiment with lighting and materials it could take a long time to sample up to see the fine details. If we could region off a part of the render that I am specificly concerned about in regards to the light and material I would get faster renders to see those fine details.

For example, I am working with a human head and I am trying to get the eyes looking good. I would like to render region the eye(s) so I can see the finer details faster.

If this function already exists I would appreciate somebody pointing it out. If it does not I would love to see it in later releases.

The render region does not make sense to me.
Maybe, for the needs you have described would be a better "Isolate Selection".. :) ;)

Just to clarify here is a comparison between what we normaly have (global render) and what I am suggesting (region render).

If I wanted to play around with a bump map I have imported I would want to focus on the bump detail. If I 'globaly rendered' it each time I made a change I would have to wait for the samples for the whole image (1000x800). If I regioned it at (400x200) for example the details will render faster.

very useful suggestion, not only for speed up the materials setting but also for quick changes on large renders and for cooking longer of some parts that needs higher samples ;)
i use it a lot with m~r and save a lot of time :)
