Hi,

In this case it seems to be related due to missing smoothgroup information.
Can you split your model vertices based on normal angle ?
Or, try importing with with the options in octane's settings to recompute smoothgroups.

There are pretty much the only Obj options in LW10.

Hi thanks for the response! :)

Unfortunately I have not a clue what you mean by "Can you split your model vertices based on normal angle ?". I'm fairly new to 3D. But I will try looking around on google to figure out this lingo.

Ok I've tried playing with the "vertex normal map" in LW10 but there aren't many options. I've also used the Octane Obj importer with the default settings and I'm still getting a faceted looking model.

Guys I promise you it's just a question of it not baking the subdivision into the mesh - it's not smoothing groups, it's actual subdivision smoothing that for some reason isn't being imported - I dont use LW but look on google for baking/collapsing/exporting sub-d meshes - you can see on the "smooth" version that there are far more polygons in the mesh..

Sorry, that is not the case.... no matter how subdivided the model is, it is faceted in Octane through the exporter, even when the model is so subdiveded that you can not see any polygons any more. It is a problem of the exporter, that is my impression...

Guys I'm planning on using Maya 2011 to model and export my objects into Octane. Or is there anything else I can use to model and export to Octane? Is there a plugin for Maya 2011 to export to Octane? Will there ever be a final working plugin to get my Lightwave 10 objects to export properly in Octane?

how about downloading blender and running your light wave scene through that first and then out to Octane through Blender?

it may or may not work and its a bit of buggering about I know but it's worth a try and it won't cost anything to have a play.

Best of luck

No alternative. I use blender also but for some projects I need to go straight from Lightwave to Octane (Animation that is). If it was only for some stills, there would be no problem though with your proposal. I still hope that the Lightwave-plugin gets some attention and will have the same (working) functionality as the blender-plugin (which is awesome).

Are you changing display subPatch level in layout or freezing the model to polys in modeller? If in layout, then I doubt the exporter would export anything other than the base mesh.
