Hello everyone,

I'm trying to export an ORBX from Blender and I keep running into problems.

After I begin the export I use activity monitor in Windows 10 to keep an eye on the Octane Server and it's usage hovers around 12.49% and after a few minutes the Octane Server usually crashes and Blender remains open. After a crash I restart both Blender and the Octane Server. On the rare instances that it doesn't crash during export it says that the export is successful and even shows a path to a file being saved as .orbx, but doesn't save out an orbx file, just a folder named assets full of textures in the same spot the ORBX is supposed to be. I've seen this behavior before with Houdini as well, when it tries to save an ORBX but crashes and only manages to save out an alembic.

I'm using the custom build, Blender with Octane 29.16 ,the scene is a 1.49GB blend file, 288 frames total, and I've been trying to export only 1 frame to test it before exporting the entire frame range, but cannot get it to do even that. I've had issues in Houdini with trying to export a frame range different from the one set in the scene, could it be that if I have a range of 1-288 and try to export 1-3 instead of the full range that it causes issues in Blender?

I've created a new camera in the scene to make sure it isn't the camera issue.

Hoping to resolve this issue so I can submit to the Render Network's Advent Competition. Thanks in advance for the help!

Best,
Dmitry

Hi!

We're about to release a new build this week.

Meanwhile, it would be great if you could share your scene with us, so we can solve any issue directly related to it.

Also, do exporting simple scenes work for you?

Thanks!

Hi Lino,

I sent a private message with a link to the scene. I did eventually manage to get it to export to ORBX by changing the scene range from 1-288, then 1 to 3, then back to 1-288 in the timeline. Maybe it was just luck because it doesn't make sense why that would work.

I did notice that the scene frame range has to be left alone in the ORBX Export dialog window and if you change it there then it'll run through the whole process but not save out an ORBX file.

Thanks for taking a look at the scene. Looking forward to the new Octane build!

Hey Lino,

I've installed the 29.17 update and attempted to export a scene of similar complexity and am running into the same issue as before.

-Scene frame range is 1-240

-I attempt to export an ORBX of 1-10 to test the scene

00_frame_range.jpg (14.85 KiB) Viewed 10577 times

-Blender begins exporting, first creates a folder bearing the filename entered in the ORBX exporter dialog
01_begins_export.jpg
-folder contains textures and a geometry.abc file
03_asset_folder.jpg
-after the geometry.abc is created, it claims success in creating the .ORBX file but never ends up creating one.

Let me know if you want me to send over this file as well. Cheers!

Update:

Changing the frame range for the entire scene from 1-240 to 1-10 and then exporting an ORBX works.
It only seems to want to create the ORBX file if the frame range in the export dialog matches the frame range defined in the Scene tab's Start and End Frames (or animation timeline).

Yes, that was the issue. We're on it.
