Ok, let's try to do a recap.

It was not possible to have a single OctaneX version supporting any type of Mac's GPU, so from some time, the OctaneX project has been divided in two:
  • OctaneX PR versions for AMD GPUs (Vega, Navi, Big Navi)
  • OctaneX 2022.1 or greater for Apple silicon M1/M2 native
IMG_9130.jpeg
c4doctaneX
  • C4D OctaneX PR15 is not available yet, so you need to stay with PR14 version under macOS Monterey, if your Mac is equipped with a supported AMD GPU
  • C4D OctaneX 2022.1 for M1/M2 is native (no need to use Rosetta2)and it is always published together with the PC CUDAA version, latest version is 2022.1.1-R6 stable
Network Rendering
  • OctaneX PR versions can Net render only with other AMD macs with same PR version installed.
  • OctaneX 2022.1/2022.1.1 versions don't have Net render yet, it is expected for 2023.2 SDK in multi platform mode (WIn-Linux-Mac M1/M2)
Hope it helps.

ciao,
Beppe

  • OctaneXPR versions for AMD GPUs (Vega, Navi, Big Navi)

Will OctaneXPR ever be upgraded to 2021, 2022? Or will it go no further than 2020? Thanks

Sorry, I don't have an official answer on this, I can only share my personal opinion, and it is not positive.
Since new Mac Pro M2 cannot use PCI AMD GPUs, I don't think there will be a future for AMD support from Apple

Let' see.

My two cents.

Mind blown! - I never once even suspected going down this particular path …but you know a fully loaded Mac mini acting as a dumb GPU for “Network rendering” … it’s about half the price of a RTX 4090 - I can actually get like four or five of them into a cluster …and Network render from a Mac Studio machine as my master - The studio by itself handles all of the Adobe apps or daVinci resolve for editing of video, etc. while the mac minis are acting as dumb rendering units …best of both worlds and silent! - And octane render my subscription it automatically comes with 10 render node licenses…..and if i need more speed rendering for a tight deadline…i just send it to the online RNDR “render farm” with one click!

Also - does anybody happen to know how much extra render nodes are after you use up your 10 with the Studio license?
Interesting! What Mac mini's with which specs are you using for that cluster?
Cheers Markus

OK so basically M1/M2 is our only real future..

I see having 2 choices..

1 - multiple mac minis or multiple mac studios being nodes today. (net render works that way right now yes?
or
2 - Mac / PC net render (which does not currently work)

so what… are we talking at least a year timeframe before we can use a PC to do the heavy lifting from the mac?

Hi cjadams,

nope, Network rendering is not currently available in OctaneX M1/M2 versions, but, since they are distributed in free Prime license only, you can use C4D Team Render with unlimited number of nodes (normally you should need a Studio+ license per node).

For full multi platform Network rendering we ned to wait for next 2023.2 major SDK update, with new revisited geometry pipeline:

Hello there.

I get crash every time I close Octane Viewer, and every time I quit c4d. (It's Octane, If I disable it every thing rus fine).

M1 Ultra (MAc Studio 2022), Ventura 13.4, Octane latest stable version.
EDIT: Cinema4d 2023.2.1 Cinema4d 2023.2.2

Note that if I don't open a file I don't crash. Only if I use a Octane file.

Is it hard to correct?

(appart that very annoying bug, I must admit I don't get much crashes).

Hi shtl_1,
please close c4d, then try to delete the oct.dat file, at the following path, the c4doctane preferences will be reset to default, and a new oct.dat file will be created on next c4d start:
`/Users/UserName/Library/Preferences/Maxon/Maxon Cinema 4D R2023_XXXXXXX/prefs/oct.dat`

If not enough, try to delete any custom c4d layout with c4doctane panels inside, and rebuild them from scratch.

Please also make sure to have installed the latest stable version 2022.1.1-R6:

ciao,
Beppe
