I always use this kind of solution to control the sharpness and the angle of the light beam.
I render images for furniture catalogs and I have to simulate in a fast way the lights of a photo studio. One of the solution could be to use ies lights but it's too complex and not so fast. So the solution of the falloff for now is the best way to achieve a very good control of the light. It's a great solution but a little bit tricky and not so friendly, so...in one of the next release is it possible to have the same effect in a simple way? I mean...it would be fantastic to have 2 parameters in the light panel (angle of the beam and sharpness of the light).

bye

Hi there!
I’ve just created a video about this topic

Also, this video about studio lighting techniques could be helpful to 3ds max users

Hi, Sina, the falloff map would be considered a deprecated technique.
Octane has a "Spotlight" node for the Distribution:
