Dear Octane community,

OTOY® is proud to announce the availability of the new DCC plugin OctaneRender for Solaris V2021.1 - for Houdini 18.5.696.

The world's fastest unbiased GPU rendering engine on CUDA and Metal now integrate completely with Houdini 18.5 Solaris.

What is OctaneRender for Solaris?
The OctaneRender for Solaris plugin is based on Pixar’s USD (Universal Scene Description) and Pixar’s Hydra API to empower artist workflows across look development, scene layout, lighting, and final rendering.

-Installation steps-

Insert the OctaneRender® plugin folder path to the houdini.env file. Houdini®creates this file after launching it for the first time.
On Linux and macOS® systems, append a single line to enable OctaneRender®:

HOUDINI_PATH = "/path/to/octane;&"

On Windows® systems, you need to set the PATH to point to the plugin bin folder as well:

PATH = "C:/path/to/octane/bin;$PATH"

Setting this environment variable outputs any error related to loading the OctaneRender® plugin on the command line for diagnosing installation problems:
HOUDINI_DSO_ERROR = 2

New features
To learn more about the new features and improvements of OctaneRender 2021.1, please check out the 2021.1 release post

- Changes since 2021.1.0.4 - 11-08-21 [Test]-
  • Fixed VDBs not updating when rendering USDA file via husk command line
  • Fixed VDBs sync issue when scrubbing the timeline
  • Fixed Denoiser pass in OctaneAOV HDA (make sure to add a Camera to enable the Denoiser pass from Imager)

-Known Issues-
- Octane Color response is disabled because Hydra buffer expects linear output
- Light Linker is yet to be supported as we are investigating if we could assign the Octane light IDs internally.
However, the usual Octane light linking works as expected.

Thank You. new update,
Does Octane For Solaris support network rendering?
Houdini has a Karma XPU (Alpha).
The advantage of Octane is network rendering. Impossible? :)

I'm sorry, is this a joke?

Not only is it a very odd choice to not add a H19 build... like, many have moved on, 18.5 is dead.... I don't know what to say.

On top of that, the 18.5 build supported is so old and not the latest production build for 18.5 ? am I missing something here or what is going on? It's really hard to not sound super rude, but this is next level "out of touch" kind of stuff.

If there is a genine lack of understanding or idea of what we would like and what makes sense to release with new builds, ask us! we are all super keen, want this to be a solid product, we need to test it for that to be the case, so make a post, ask what people want..

far out...

H19 crashes when we compile the plugin with optimization enabled. We are working with SideFX to find a solution. Other than that one issue it is already working with H19. We would have preferred to release for H19 since it uses a later version of USD.

Hello,

I've installed the Solaris plugin and did a test scene in Houdini, but somehow I can't activate Octane Render in the Stage context. There is an option for Octane in the viewport dropdown menu, but once I click it, nothing happens and it "disappears". I've tested the same scene with Redshift - which I've got installed as well - and the viewport rendering inside Solaris works flawlessly. Any idea what's going wrong? Thanks for letting me know :)

Hello there,

It sounds like the crash is happening due to license activation. Octane Solaris license can be activated from the main plugin shelves!
Please try the steps and let us know if Octane still crashes!!

Hi BK,

Thanks for the suggestion. I followed your advice step by step. Octane has been activated for the plugin, but the same issue persists within Solaris, i.e. I click on Octane to activate it as the viewport renderer and then nothing happens, while the option to use Octane disappears from the dropdown menu. Have a look at the screen recording below:
Octane_SolarisIssue.mp4
(5.97 MiB) Downloaded 3373 times
I wouldn't even say that Octane "crashes" because the normal Octane IPR still works flawlessly, even after the viewport render option has disappeared.

Any idea what's going wrong?
