The issue with black box still exists when rendering VDB file for the first time.

I usually run OctaneServer in it's own shell so I can see any error messages. When I tried to import the Disney cloud one quarter scale version I got these errors in the shell:

Octane: unknown ERROR: 32
Octane: ERROR: Error transferring the volume file to the server.

Octane: unknown ERROR: 32
Octane: ERROR: Error transferring the volume file to the server.

Octane: unknown ERROR: 32
Octane: Starting Octane engine...
Octane: ERROR: Error transferring the volume file to the server.

I don't see the domain as black though and I'm running on Linux, so YMMV.

Oh, I just reproduced your issue, but only with the final render (F12). I got that same error as before:

Octane: Starting Octane engine...
Octane: unknown ERROR: 32
Octane: Starting Octane engine...
Octane: Starting Octane engine...

After I did a preview render (which worked), the second F12 render worked as well.

Looks like it is not OS related. Same happens on OSX builds.
