BC1 compressed textures incur frequent crashes

Hello all,

I've run into a problem working on a scene with 177 materials, and a total of about 540 textures. I was previously having trouble (as you can imagine) with VRAM consumption and so started switching all greyscale textures to float, and then all RGB textures to BC1 compression, RGBA to BC3 and HDRi to BC6. About a third of all textures are greyscale, the overwhelming majority of the rest is simple RGB.

I was about halfway switching the RGB textures over to BC1 compression when I started getting recurring crashes. In between crashes and with frequent saves I managed to get two thirds of the RGB textures switched over to BC1 compression. Now the file is very unstable, and Octane hangs while trying to generate materials.

The VRAM savings are very impressive, I'd like to avoid having to remove the compression if possible - is this inherent in using compressed textures or is a workaround possible ?

Which version of plugin do you use? Did you try with latest builds?

Unfortunately I switched to V4.05-R2 and the file keeps crashing the plugin very frequently - frequently enough that as-is, it is impossible to work on. While before it was still handling crashes gracefully, now C4D freezes when changing the material displayed in the node editor or while makign changes to the scene while live view is active. Any other ideas ?

Is it happening in specific scene or every scene? What happen if you disable node previews from settings?

It is happening only in this specific scene, and only since I started using VRAM texture compression. I tried working with disabled node previews, but the plugin just crashed again - gracefully this time.

Could you show render log outputs(c4doctanelog.txt and bugreport.zip) and a screenshot from crash moment as in picture?
