Hello,
Can Octane adjust the beautiful round edge like Redshift?

Octane Rounded Edges Problem
Moderator: juanjgon
This is an ongoing issue; I have similar problems with the Octane rounded edges feature in C4D. As far as I can tell, it's a conflict between face/vertex normals. C4D's poly tools aren't the greatest, so my quick and lazy fix is to export the geometry as an OBJ using vertex normals, then reimport. There's a thread about it here on the forums from a few months ago, but I'm having trouble finding it.
For what it's worth, the geometry I build in Maya does not have this problem, but a lot of geometry built in C4D, especially the primitives, often does.
Here's a simple example. C4D tube primitive with horrible edge rounding before and after .obj export/import.

Quick question what is the plan for release on the 2018.1 because Oc4 is not ready yet and we are at October, I'm bit confuse we will have a release Octane 4 then Octane 2018.1 or will be no Octane 4? In my calculation (probably wrong) 2018.1 will come next year but then is 2019.1

I'm just asking because is a big "DEAL" round edges for Product visualization cause save hours of man work fixing CAD datas without fillet (roundedges) and this is kind left as priorities for a while we are waiting on a correct like mentalray/vray/arnold/redshift and more. I think would be great to give that for companies who pay a lot production people to fix CAD model and save budget to by more GPU haha.

Cheers,
JO

I'm just curious. Why should it be a real priority on Houdini ? As you could do nice beveling on houdini at any geometry stage to a relatively low cost with exellent result and atttributes use as bevelling variables ? Geometry overflow is less a problem on Octane than few month ago.Rounded Edges is definitely top priority
What's wrong with bevel sop guys ?

We are talking CAD files which can be modified, without a custom work, basically every company are using CAD data, is because no one want pay modelers or somebody to add bevels and the CAD data, anyway is not related "Houdini FX stuff" but all engines really we are saying because was point out once again by user on the forumto add proper roundcorners, let's think production not a FX here.blobbybarack wrote:I'm just curious. For example, when you have 200 models of laptop from Dell as CAD format to be converted for "rendering photography" for example you want have system where presets would work so right now Octane is the ONLY render engine who can't do that properly.
Anyway maybe this tread need go again on General section of the forum and have all companies who use CAD datas to request to make clear how important this actually are. For us basically all workflow are based on CAD data.
Cheers

Making sence. Basicly you are talking to a quad only evangelist.
Thanks for taking some time to respond.
When i get this kind of problem as getting some Cad from clients, i'm used to convert everything to vdb and convert back to polygon and doing some retopo on it (or not if not really needed).
Fun fact, if you cranck up vdb resolution high but not too high, you will get a nice bevel. But it's not very tweakable for sure.
This is dirty, i know.
Too much smooth and not a nice hard bevel. Not for hero object for sure...can do the trick for secondary one.
the wire one is the same mesh result with a wiresop
