This is a test scene I created for Maxwell a while ago. Octane gets to "voxelizing..." and then my whole computer freezes and my disk buzzes rhythmically.

The forum won't let me upload the file, it just uploads then reloads to a blank newtopic page.. I've uploaded it to http://kano.net/in/latticemaxwell.zip

Here's the maxwell render, excited to see the Octane one once this is fixed ;)

I tested files, you uploaded, and noticed it is needed more then 9.62GB of RAM to perform voxelizing.
And following image is the result of 11 min 20 sec.

And, the 60 min's result.

something looks indeed strange with memory. As soon as it starts voxelizing, the memory goes up like crazy and you end up swapping which kills all of your computer's performance.

I'll have a quick look at it to see what's up

Thanks for reporting

Hi,

This is completely normal.

It's due to the fact that all your geometry is diagonal, which is a tough case for our voxelisation algorithm.
What happens on your computer is that the memory requirement to voxelise it goes over your amount of RAM and the computer starts swapping parts of memory to your swapspace on your harddisk, which in turn makes the process decrease a hundredfold in speed.

There is no fix for this at this time.
Instancing support (which is coming soon to octane), is the only way to render this with octane and voxelise it in a few minutes. (did you use instances with maxwell???)
These are special scenes designes to stresstest raytracers. Comparing octane render against 7+ year old render engine product developed by 5-10 people gives results like this. Your 7 month old baby cannot read japanese either.

Octane is a practical product, designed for artists to work on architecture, products, movies, etc.
The technical light traps, stress test scenes and other experiments are not our priority at this time, but they will possible available in the near future.

Yours,

OK, thanks for looking into it! I thought since it was only 1200 polygons it wouldn't pose a problem. And yes it was rendered with instances in Maxwell.

there you go, instancing, but don't worry, we're already planning it.

Instancing... I already dream of large fields of modelled grass blades ! :)
