Not for the Devs of course, i feel like they're doing as much as they can. But higher up should really have a stable and consistent release schedule.

We keep getting promises, and having those promises get delayed.
The AI denoiser is a big thing most are waiting for.

We wanna get to V4 asap, so lets try harder to get things out and update your base @Otoy, even if its a weekly update on progress. Keep us informed
I have to agree as well.

It's becoming a bit of a joke at this point; starting to have serious doubts about the future of Octane... looks like the focus is on vr/realtime. Interesting stuff but for those of us who use Octane in more VFX driven work rather than just to make everydays, it's quickly becoming not a viable option. You don't have to look far (check twitter) to find how many veteran Octane users are gleefully switching to redshift.

Jules said a release should happen some time this week. And then a 3.09 denoiser test build shortly after. At least according to the interview he gave on the Brograph Podcast.

http://brograph.com/podcast/2018/2/5/br ... odcast-120

Listen at around 50min...given the opaque nature of OTOY it's certainly not a grantee. But I must admit I felt very positive hearing Jules talk about Octane....You can hear that he does care about the future of Octane. Although it is very frustrating waiting and hoping, I think Octane is going in the right direction. I like Redshift but Octane is not trying to be Redshift so will never be fair to compare the two options. It is fair to say that Redshift are competitors so OTOY should be trying to keep users invested in their product though for sure :)

I get the impression the reason OTOY is so quiet at times is because they are dealing with many development challenges. They cannot accurately predict when they will be solved so its better to not make any firm promises. They're dammed if you do and dammed if they don't. If they release a buggy and unfinished build of Octane we will all be complaining about that and if they don't release anything because they are trying to fix problems caused by new features and maintain the speed octane across all supported hardware people will also complain. It must be hard to balance. Admittedly they should do more to reassure users that things are moving forward.

Ideally stable releases would be much more rapid and not have bug or problems but It's easy to forget that OTOY do not charge yearly maintenance like Redshift and waiting a couple of months inbetween releases is not that unreasonable for the money we have paid for a seat of Octane.

Fingers crossed that something happens soon though :)

I feel your pain...Listen to the podcast though and see what happens in the next week. Having Brigade implemented by v 4.0 would be amazing. I'm still hoping and waiting for raytraced rounded corners but from the sounds of things that may not happen soon...

I don’t really care about brigade - I care about having a robust versatile tool that doesn’t cause headaches in production.

Well it's not just Brigade they are working on. According to the interview:

3.08 = Stable this week (Hopefully)
3.09 = Denoiser maybe a development build soon after 3.08 stable
3.10 = Mainly bug/stability fixes no new features
4.00 = Implementation of Brigade core. This according to the podcast would make scene load times go away and increase interactivity

It is not about the Version 4 that is important to come but the promised features. Having a major release only costs money for the users and most render plugins (VRay, Maxwell,...) have longer release cycles then the host apps. It wouldn't make sense to imitate companies like Autodesk to spit out updates on a yearly basis.
So to have a major update all 3 years is normal. I am a big supporter of Octane since 2010 but the announcement of features and the reality looked always a bit different. Usually it takes 3 times longer to see something in reality at Otoy, but still I have the feeling that they care and work hard in the background.
Beeing able to use Octane on a Mac should be a priority, even if its done via headless rendering it will lift Otoy way up. Solid Maya and Max plugins are also required for honest VFX workflows. The AI-denoiser is a nice cherry on the cake. I expect the RC V3.08 in a couple of days and the stable 3.08 and 3.09 beta in a few weeks. But let's see.

Otoy - keep on rocking with the great approach and product you have always given us!
I remember looking forward to 3.0, it was very exciting, and now even more so as things get closer to V4.
Looking forward to the great things coming our way.
