Hi everyone,

Refractive Software LTD is proud to announce the availability of the third intermediate octanelive platform testing release. (aka pre-2.3_3)

This release is for PC's running MS Windows (x64 and win32).

EDIT: a new linux version of Pre23_3 will be posted later due to a stability issue with certain cuda toolkit versions / graphics cards. We are investigating this and will most likely post a build early next week

We will also supply an Apple Mac OS X version early next week.

Note that this release is one of the first octanelive platform builds, and we have not fully finished the server backend network, so there is currently no redundancy, only one server is active, so there might be outages while we work on it.

This release is therefore NOT recommended to be used for any professional applications where time is crucial, use at your own risk.

Pleas note also this version will need you to enter your OctaneLive account and password. These can be found as explained here:
http://www.refractivesoftware.com/forum ... =24&t=3095

We recommend professional users to use the 2.2b version for now

New Features and fixes since Pre23_2

Code: Select all

- improvements to the glass material, less fireflies and faster convergence (eg less noise on glass objects),
this is not a minor change, but it is very noticeable.
- Improvements to area lights/emitters, bug fixes, optimization and improved stability.
also, reflection of area lights on specular or glossy materials is fixed.
- Normalized blackbody spectrum option (enabled by default), all blackbody temperatures give the same power if enabled.
- New film filter, for anti-aliasing, which can be configured in the render kernel options.
 It replaces the supersampling concept.
- Subsampling filter to give a less blocky appearance while navigating with subsampling enabled.
- multi-gpu and non-power of two tearing/artifacts fixed.
- image saving to file fixed.
- diffuse transmission is fixed.
- all preference panel custom interface controls are fully working.
- plugin/export crash bug is fixed
- sunsky lightsource power parameter bug fixed.
- many other small improvements and bugfixes.

How to connect to OctaneLive through a firewall/router

If you have a firewall/router, and you cannot log into the octanelive service (eg, the server cannot be contacted), configure your firewall or router to allow outbound connections to the URL named 'live1.refractivesoftware.com'.

I did not have to enter my account information, and it says account activated.

I already had an account activated on this machine, so did that make it so that it was good to go? or is there a glitch in your live account implementation on this machine?

couldn't tell for sure based on what was written on the information, as I was expecting to have to enter the information again.

No, just like with the old license system, your octane live account information is stored in a file and shared between new releases, so you don't need to deactivate/reactivate between 2.3 versions.

I can't render anything, because Octane crashes everytime :(

* if I click on a material from live db
* if I click on a newly created material/texture node
* if I click on an imported scene node

The output is always the same (once it was no line 27):

Code: Select all

Releasing cuda context on thread -694515440
Activating cuda context on thread -716576496
Cuda error in file ''xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx : unspecified launch failure.

Looks realy good, but... ;)
Export from Softimage, change materials in Octane and save the scene.
Export again, Octane loads the scene, the materials are set to default.
In the same session, open the scene with file->open, it works...

Looks like that Octane use the materials from the mtl file when the exporter use the -r flag.

EDIT:
Yes, have tested it now.
I have change the material in Softimage and Octane use that changed material and not the one from the scenefile.

EDIT2:
Another alternative is that the -n flag is ever set.
