I have a simple plane on wish I scatter a meshes (7000 faces) using particle flow.
Each time I set particle birth to more than 1500 instances Max crashes when opening OctaneRender viewport (or launching a render).
I think 1500 instance is not a big deal for particle...I would need 10 000 + instances in this scene...
Is it a memory issue?
Is there a way to instance the meshe?

I noticed delays or lacks with Pflow, but not crashes.
Could you kindly share the file (in private if you want) to check your issue?

Sorry for posting so late, I was off for a few days.
Here's a scene.
A simple Pflow scattering teapot on a plane.
It renders with Birth set to 2000.
If I raise the birth to 3000 it crashes.
Seems to be a memory issue...

24 Gb ram on a dual E5-2630 xeon + Win7pro SP1.
2 GPUs : GTX 980 ti + GTX 780
PS I tried desactivating the GTX 780 GPU but it still crashes

Hi Fabrice,
I made some test with your scene, I think your crash depends on memory.
Lags persist and increase with increasing instances, but I did not crash; I had a long lag freezing at about 6,000.
I've reported this issue to developers earlier, but I'll add your test too.

VRam I mean.
If you are using GTX 980Ti and GTX 780 together, your total Vram avaible (in Octane) is 3GB.
If you are using GTX 780 only for OS, monitor etc.. and GTX 980 in Octane, your total Vram (in Octane) is 6GB.
Certainly Ram could be a cause, but you can check it in Windows task manager by checking how much RAM is available by increasing the istance.
Having said that, using many many instances, 3dsMax Viewport suffers (lags) with GTX 780 to display your scene, regardless of Octane render, you can find it in scanline too.
I think there is an issue between Pflow and Octane, because Forest pack seems to work better with istance, does not lags or creates freezing.

When redering with 3000 particle, the task manager indicates that Ram stays under 20 Go usage over 24 Go total.
So it's not a Ram limit problem I guess.
Also what is strange is that the octane viewport indicates 4.794 Go available VRam.
Shouldn't it be 6 Go available as only the GTX980ti is active?

Around 4.794 GB, is your monitor/s connected to gtx 980ti?

Connect both monitors to Gtx 780, you will have full 6Gb and Gtx 980ti power available under Octane.
Windows 7 is better than windows 10.
