Hi milo,
have you opened the file with GIMP or PS?
What kind of masks are you using exactly?
What are your kernel and Camera Imager settings?
What are you rendering settings?

Hi milo,
2. Render Layer Masks are not native passes from Octane. They are a feature of plugin and they get extracted from RenderLayer feature of Octane. So you can't see directly in Live Viewer. Plugin runs extra render sessions for every mask to extract the alpha from RenderLayers. But you can test every ID in Live Viewer by activating Render Layer.
3. if you need more sampling, eg. for blurred mask, increase this value.
4. if you need soft infochannels, you need to switch this value to Distributed rays.
In general, it depends from your needs.

1, you should set the Tonemap type to Tonemapped if you worl with info passes
