I'm testing the latest demo in order to understand differences between the Backplate option in the material slot and those in the Environment Slot panel..need a tutorial actually..or examples BUT I stumbled upon this artifact..if that is.. were do I adjust such smooth problem as I never had it in my 2.x version , is a Max 2016 problem or Core function not working? Thank you

Thanks, I believe something has changed in parsing or smoothing lower polygon than a certain number?

Same in Octane 3 but clearly with the same number of segment is noticeable

Hi Guys,
Ray epsilon can affect the render, but the geometry is subject to settings such as smooth (parametric objects), modifiers meshsmooth and smooth (Octane material).
Geometrie with few segments (screenshots) has good results, but it might have issue.

Hi Paride but this is textbook :) and I mean about the Polygon numbers BUT still I believe we are not getting there, look at my images again, my point was that from 2.x to 3.x ( or at least this release ) the difference between a simple illumination of a 32 segment sphere without changing the dafault Ray Epsilon is definitely different .. for the worst I mean

+ + + + + + +
it seems to me that what with the ray Epsilon .... ( CM - world ) when the value of 0.001 of the shadow is smooth but AO is wrong with the value of 0.0001 shadows have the gap in the polygons but the correct AO

.....

this topic should be investigated by the developers !!!!

I beg you to perform AO at the micro level . !!!!
probably needs to be some connection between the ray Epsilon ....and AO
