Missing textures in xref generator

I'm trying to use xrefs for a large scene. The textures show up when I use xrefs with generator checked OFF. When I check it ON (to create an instance and keep master file light) the texture disappears. Is there a way around this or am I the only one getting this problem?

Also, please note that this happens even with non image textures like simple colored diffused materials, so it's definitely not an image path problem.

Why do you want to do this? It's obviously not supported feature. This plugin is different than other renderers. It has to create a link for every mat/texture/objects and follow for updates. So this is complex procedure and objects has to be part of loaded scene. Objects are not included to scene when you select this option.

This option is so you create a 'quasi' instance of the xref object so as not to increase the filesize of the master scene and keep it manageable. My master scene is 15mb with the xref file about 2gb (high poly rig with animated cloth sims etc). This xref needs to be imported into several other master scenes as well and managed independently of where it's included.

I didn't know it was an unsupported feature, hence the question "am I the only one getting this problem?". So I take it there are no plans to support this in the future?

I've gave some trys for this but I don't have any plans anymore. Because it's not easy to do without breaking up current workflow of plugin. That's why i wrote this explanation.

as a workaround, have you tried with the alembic workflow?
