Oh yeas, I have heard New Yorkers are fond of talking with only those who already agrees and is already aware of everything. Nice to meet one in person. You drink also latte instead of coffee? I love stereotypes.

Your image just confirms what I said: one clunky design environment, with an enormous error margin between the design and final product. How could people live with this?

Please leave the thread, you are ignorant on the subject and are of no help on this topic, you are only causing problems for those of us who have legitimate need for this legitimate feature.

We are not discussing tolerances, we are not discussing manufacturing work flows, we are discussing the feature of rounded edges in Octane.

Okay, I leave since you said please.

Go ahead, do continue "talking" (= demanding) about Otoy delivering finally something that is apparently quite complicated algorithms. If it was an easy job, I am sure, it would be here already.. If you all yell at once, sorry talk at once, maybe it will be finished sooner? That's how it goes in New York.

PS.
I just already learned a ton here, thank you very much, so I can now go.

We will be starting working on what will probably be a completely new implementation shortly. Do not expect however to be ready in matter of weeks as it is not a trivial thing to do.
Sigh..
The question is already asked and answered in a way in first page. We'll see if it goes well on the developing side. Wish all the best for it.
I too work heavily on CAD models coming from clients. And proper R.Edges features do help a lot...
I hope one day ristoraven will get a messed up client CAD file :) and need this R.Edges. Only then he could understand my frustration about this feature.
I believe no need to keep a meaningless ranting about it. You are free see it unnecessary also free to not using it as you see fit.

Oguzbir,

Like I said, I may end up with this eventually, so I wanted to know.

Oh, I didn't leave :)
Fortunately allgoodey is not an authority here.

This is just bizarre to me, since if you look any other modeler work with Octane, they are flawless, with all the beautiful round edges. CAD just doesn't do it, yet, that is the one used to design actual products..

And if it is painful to model something accurately, see what Adam Savage went trough just creating this "simple" aluminum knob @Tested:

That's painful.

Ristoraven, could you please calm down and stop attacking others? Thanks.

As an update on the matter: We plan to release a test build this week with the first stage of the rounded edges overhaul. It's basically trying to improve the current system as much as possible by improving the edge detection in the geometry compilation and improving the rendering of rounded edges. Arturo started working on a new approach to rendering, but at this point in time it is currently more research than development. I think in the next 1-2 weeks we will know if that approach is feasible or not.

CAD software can add radii/fillets to edges, no problem. As it was mentioned earlier, sometimes INCOMPLETE models are passed along for rendering. As a virtual sharp edge reflects no light, adding small fillets adds some realism.

I have issues with larger fillets and blends, especially with the bathroom/tap/shower fittings I render for a local company. Quite often cast parts come out of the mould looking exactly like the CAD model (you can see the radius boundary) but then because of other post processes, like linishing, plating, everything becomes a bit smoother and the nasty boundaries are no longer visible. There is no one click solution for this in any software. I'd have to remodel with far smoother blends. So... just tweak the chrome reflections in PS instead.

Nothing really changed since my last contribution to this thread so that's still valid. I will not post any further updates until there's a meaningful update for you.

Sure,

I just hope that "safe space" requirements doesn't go much further, so that people can participate future in conversations what they don' already know much about.. Since I was asked to leave for not knowing or being a pro already on the subject..

But, I consider my self to be warned. So, I'm out.
