Let's wait and see how this goes.

Is it by any chance similar to Felix?

I think it goes beyond a simple license check but more of a requirement for some features to work which will be delivered online... Otherwise, nothing will prevent a hacker to bypass this Internet thing altogether and make it work anyways...

I would like for the thing to NOT stop working if anything happens to the Internet Connection. Can't get to the online material database? ok. The render halts on ISP hickup? hell no. I would prefer a hardware lock, I'll gladly pay for it in exchange for some peace of mind. But I know where you're going radiance, Rich Internet Applications are the future, we better get used to it ;)

mmm... what about this: you click on the mesh node ---> connecting to RS server where a hundred GTX480 get the job done in no time for good licensed users

..sorry, just time for me to go to bed

as I said, let's wait and see...

I am with you 100% I just hope Octane just doesn't require it to authorize before each frame in a sequence. That could be a problem, but delivering new features through the connection would be awesome.

Octane is installed on my PC without any Internet connection.
The reason is that i want to prevent viruses, attacks and trojans.
Its my pure workstation.
My buraeu is far from my wireless lan router. i have lot of dropouts.... :(
Im sure it will protect against piracy but :|

Hi Radiance, I'm all for it. I'd rather this than have Octane end at say beta 3.1 and never even make it to v1 because you guys have gone under. We all lose then. Looking forward to seeing the new version, I'm sure it wont dissapoint.

radiance wrote:Hey,

as said this is not a licensing / anti piracy scheme which checks upon octane launch(as that's easily cracked).
think of it more as octane render becoming a world of warcraft client.
So that means there is not only an inital check upon starting Octane. You require a constant connection while rendering?

To me personally this doesn't matter because I'm online 24/7. But I'm a little worried that this might alienate a large part of the user base. It may do more harm (losing customers) than good (losing pirates).
