I use neat image and neat video all the time.
You can't rely on it by only doing a couple of samples. But if you have a mostly clean image with some darker areas still noisy, it works great and doesn't delete detail.

If you are a mac user you should really consider Blender Cycles with denoising branch. This denoising Blender build is still being in development and does not work with multi GPU's though
