I use neat image and neat video all the time.
You can't rely on it by only doing a couple of samples. But if you have a mostly clean image with some darker areas still noisy, it works great and doesn't delete detail.

If you are a mac user you should really consider Blender Cycles with denoising branch. It does the magic right inside the app automatically after the render.
Take look at the examples here:

This denoising Blender build is still being in development and does not work with multi GPU's though :(

We've been exploring whether it is possible to add it (and other denoiser plug-ins) to ORC for cloud render jobs with 3.1.
