How about the 3dcoat style licensing. Only one active license is allowed and if you try to use it in another computer it will give a warning but will not stop the program and no failure. If the licensing is violeted an email will probably be sent to warn of possible license deactivation for the owner.
I have experience with the same type of license that is proposed here. Jimmyrigger for lightwave uses the same system. When starting the program it will immediately connect to a server. If there's no internet you get a blank screen. In one year it stopped working 3 times due to server problem on their side. Couldn't use it for a day those 3 times. I didn't get mad since the stuff I do with jimmyrigger are not work related. For some people they might get mad. And sometimes the internet problem could be the ISP on each country so octane will be unuseable. Just sharing my experience.
No system is full proof. Some smart hacker will probably bypass that internet licensing system.
If the price is competitive I think octane will do well and not disappear next year. I think there are more octane users now than other render engine.
Anyway just my two cents. I have no problem whatever you decide since I'm always connected on the net.

Well. To be honest, I wasn't stoked to hear about it needing a connection until you mentioned it would help keep the company afloat and even a cellphone network would work. Since, my internet connection at the moment is on par with a 56k connection. :/

If this helps the company then that's awesome!

Oh! A question. Say. For example, you're rendering something, and your connection disconnects, do you lose what you have running?

I have mixed feelings regarding what you wrote Radiance. Do we have to stay connected to the server at all times to be able to render? Or is it only a one time verify when we start Octane?

It must be the second... Or maybe it will need some seconds of connection for every scene... This makes it difficult for animations or batch rendering...

?! :/ I thought your antipiracy plans were supposed to be something which will not inconvenience your loyal customers yet this is one of the most inconvenient antipiracy plans I've ever come across. It doesn't make sense that should something happen to my internet connection I will not be able to render my work! And as luck will have it these things tend to go wrong when deadlines are at the tightest. A power failure a client might understand but saying I cannot render because I have internet problems is not a credible excuse to give a client...

as said this is not a licensing / anti piracy scheme which checks upon octane launch(as that's easily cracked).
think of it more as octane render becoming a world of warcraft client.

Always the same story. Licensed customer has all the disadvantages.
CG for me is an hobby but I have bought 2 license of Octane (one 50% off). Now my two license will became almost useless.
In my area unfortunatly no ADSL, I navigate with and UMTS key and the connection is not stable at all. Plus I have maximum 30h in a month, for now.
I don't want to connect my workstation to the internet, I use my macbook for navigate (less trojan).
I have spent a lot of money for my new computer with two video card and now?
It's your software so you can do what you want, but I hope you plan to do some refund because you change the condition of use.

And don't think to destroy the piracy problem with this.
