Very nice! Yes please tell us what you used. I've been messing with VDB's from the test build of Blender 2.77 but haven't really been too satisfied with what I'm getting. I think the dark background and reflective floor helps a lot! Now I am motivated to go back and give these effects another try.

I used Houdini to make the VDBs from volumes/fluids and then the latest version of 3.0 alpha to render them. I'll post screenshots as well as my scene files below!
The trick I used was to set the volume ramp to RGB colors. So left is red middle green and right blue while keeping the emission node white. Then I adjusted the "max volume" slider till I see all 3 colors where you want them within the volume. Once that done you can start placing the colors you want with an idea of how they'll re-map. Its crazy freakin cool how fast it resolves the volume. RNDing a look for fluids is just easy with octane which is just incredible...
For this scene I had the volume step length set to 1.

The VDBs, (48 frames), may still be uploading. its about 3.2 gigs
I also placed frame 48 by itself so you guys can start playing now!
