I'm Trying out Octane render for the first time and it seems very interesting. But I've had a bit of trouble. The trial version seems to be always crashing. I am working on a 32 bit machine with a graphics card which is not the best (9800 gt 512mb ram). The scenes that I have tried are not that heavy so i cannot imagine what is going on.

I would really like this to work so I can convince people here in the office that it's worth the investment. We usually use vray here but as always, the faster the better.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Hi,

crashes are usually due to either hardware, operating system or driver issues, or probably in your case not having enough memory.
first, install the latest drivers from the nvidia home page, then try our demo suite scenes (on our downloads page, and also watch the tutorial videos linked on the downloads page)

also, if you export with the wrong OBJ settings from your host app, octane might not like it, so you should use the correct ones.
check the thread 'OBJ export settings' in our resources forum for the right settings for your app.

the commercial version also includes plugins for various 3d apps (max, maya, softimage, sketchup, modo, blender 2.4) that are plug and play, export camera/motion blur, sun direction and animations.

Also, a very large model requires a lot of working memory on your PC (system RAM, not GPU memory) to voxelise as octane has a very memory hungry voxelisation algorithm that is required to get speed while rendering on a GPU, and a 32bit OS can only use in practice up to about 1.4GB of system memory.

You can run it as large adress aware, octane supports it: http://wiki.mcneel.com/rhino/memoryincrease
Otherwise i suggest you switch to an x64 OS, that has no limits and you can voxelise very complex models.

Thanks for the quick response Radiance.

I have seen all the tutorials and used the scenes. I have to say, even with the crashing I am convinced that this is a great piece of software and will get a lot better in the near future. Just hope that some caracteristics like displacement and lights will quickly be integrated.

Unfortunantely My 64bit machine has a ati firegL card and not a nvidia :(. That is why I'm trying this out on this machine.
Once again thank you for the sugestions and keep up the good work.

When I get a chance to by a good graphics card for my home computer for sure I will purchase Octane Render. :D

Try loading some of the files in the demo suite. It is a separate download on the download page. That will tell you if the issue is the exporting from your host or some other problem with your system. Check your gpu drivers and play with your setting for obj export to find something that works.
