Hi,i got 2 gpus installed a 980 ti top and on bottom a 680. If i set the 980 (main my screens are attached to it) to full priority while rendering, even if i dont use at all the 2nd card, i have lag navigating the viewport and in windows.
Is this normal behavior or should i set up somehow the 2nd gpu to handle everything while the other is on full priority? thanks
GPU load and lag

From my experience it doesn't really matter if you have your card set to low priority, or, the difference is negligible.
My titan X with 12 gb of ram will cause lag (though not severe to the point that I wouldn't be able to browse, but it will cause obvious lag in any video I try to watch while rendering) regardless of how much ram it has still available.
It seems to be somewhat smoother if I have 1 gb scene loaded as opposed to a 3GB scene for example, but it's not a massive difference.
My guess is that Octane is just not managing the load limits with priority turned on very well or perhaps it works differently with GPUs as compared with CPUs where you can set it to low priority or turn off a core and proceed to work smoothly while rendering.

Thing is in my case, with low priority is really smooth but without it is really laggy despite the fact that i have a 2nd card completely inactive in rendering. Is there a way to define the 2nd gpu as windows dedicated or max viewport dedicated? thanks for they reply

Thanulee,
Plug all monitors into the 680, then uncheck active in the render /devices tab. It is the only way.
Then you will have the 980 always ready to render with no lag.
On small scenes you can try low priority on the 680 or you could enable device for overnight rendering.
We are shifting our workstations to be the following:
1x 960 gtx 4gb - for monitors only (windows, max etc) /device disabled for octane
1x or 2x 980ti 6gb soley for rendering.
It seems the only way to ensure smooth performance and interactivity. Before introducing a gpu for everything other than rendering the machines get unusable on medium-big scenes.
This also helps with disributed rendering as another workstation / artist can access any of the 2nd and third gpus without impacting the artist if their rendering gpus are idle and the slave daemons are configured correctly.

Thanks a lot mate! i ll give it a shot this weekend!
At some point things have gotten much worse for me, after updating the plugin. Since around 2.24.2 just moving the cam in the viewport is very slow even if I'm not rendering and the scene is almost empty. When I start a render it will often freeze/lag so much I won't be able to do anything for anywhere between 1 minute and 2 minutes. The 3Ds Max UI is constantly redrawing itself every time I touch something. It's really gotten bad. I only have a Titan Black but the scenes barely take any memory so it doesn't make sense.

Maybe you unchecked low priority in render setup - devices tab?Phil_RA wrote:At some point things have gotten much worse for me, after updating the plugin. Heya, thanks again for the tip. I m having some free time this weekend so im performing some tests. What u say is absolutely correct. I have no issues with this setup. Viewport is lag free and render when 980 is on full priority.WhaleHunter wrote:Thanulee,

I face another very strange issue though. When i enable the 680 card, it throttles the performance. For example i have this scene which with 980 on i get 7 samples per sec. Enabling the 2nd card i drop to 5....
Now if i connect again the 2 screens on 980, i have the lag when full priority, but when i enable second gpu my samples go to around 9 (as expected).
Does this behavior sounds normal to u?
I really appreciate ur help on this

Continuing my last post: the card which has no screens attached on it doesnt go 100% as u see on msi afterburner... Thats why when i have the 680 with screens on i get throttle cause 980 cannot fully utilise its cuda.... What is this now?
Any devs around to confirm if this is normal behaviour? this wouldnt go unnoticed in multi gpu rigs and is major issue.
