The "white dots" in your image are called fireflies and are a result of overpowered lights in your scene hitting specular surfaces.
Try lowering the power of your lights and increasing the exposure settings to get a visible scene, even under low lighting conditions.

In the "Settings" tab of OctaneRender you'll find the "Imager" node, where you can find "Hotpixel Removal" and "Caustic Blur".
Setting the Hotpixel removal to lower settings than 1 will reduce fireflies while degrading image quality (blurring it).

Changing the caustic blur will only limitedly help with your problem, so try the above ones first.

I recorded a video tutorial about scene lighting in OctaneRender last year - maybe this helps you in some way: https://vimeo.com/113861642

Pls click on the Octane Notes link in my signature for additional info on rendering noise.

Thanks guys for the excellent help.

As it turned out, it was less a firefly problem, and more like orange noise in the shadow areas.
The orange kind of matches something else in the shot so I ended up keeping it.

Played with the exposure, and ray epsilon, but didn't seem to help.

Oh, on a sidenote:

I realized I use about the same 7 settings in each render, but have to continually DIG
to locate them. Is there some way to "collect" all:

1. preferred controls into one panel?

2. my preferred settings into one push button, or panel?

thanks

Reduce Kernel->Path Termination Power (to about 0.1).

Set your preferred setting values and rightclick the Settings tree and "Save as Default"

You can already do this by selecting the material name you want to paste to and then selection the rightclick menu option "Paste Glossy to all Materials named [material name]".

Set your preferred setting values and rightclick the Settings tree and "Save as Default"

actually, for the wishlist, I would request MULTIPLE CHOICES of default settings -- since I have numbers
of preferred settings.

thanks!

If you have a number of favorite rendertarget settings, use the Export and Import Rendertarget Settings menu options.
