Hi,
I have prepared an example for both, scatter node and spline grass, I have used c4d for generate the instances and the splines:

In my opinion, the scatter node is more efficient, you can have a lot of versions and update is very easy.
On the other side, the splines are more complex to generate and handle. Splines are perfect for hair and fur. Furthermore, without an integrated plugin with hair system is quite impossible to fine tuning the effect.

P.S. is not possible to compare Maxwell with Octane, except for the output... is like comparing a Mercedes with a Ducati
