I'm testing out Octane with maya 2016 and I can't find how to set the hypershade to render the new shader ball using octane. the render selector dropdown in the shader ball window only shows me hardware render. is this not compatible yet?

I think not...I have three renderers installed and the only one supported seems to be Mental Ray (and Hardware). I guess it's probably not an easy thing to implement.

I'll try to do it later, but I'm not sure if this is accessible through Maya API...

Thanks looking into it, hopefully it's possible!! That would be so extremely helpful. Maya's plain sphere just doesn't work well for creating materials, especially things with SSS.
