Hey all, I made a simple projector that is capable of projecting images or gobos (or if you simply need a directional spotlight) in Octane.

It works by placing a specular screen in front of a bright light source, but the principle is that the light source must be very tiny and very bright, or else you will only get a blurry image. I'm certain that what is really happening is that the resulting point light is emulating the focal point caused by a lens, thus resulting in a clear image.

The prop has my logo on it which can be used as a reference point in aligning the orientation of the projected image. Basically, the logo is on the side of the top of the image. The projector is not intended as an in-scene prop, but rather a source of illumination.

Here are some examples of the projector in action:

As well as a LQ video clip:. http://www.thetagraphics.com/octane/test/!proj1.swf

The gobo image of the rings and the poc file is included. All I ask is that I get credit, and I am interested in seeing what you all do with it. Enjoy! ;)

EDIT: Fixed the video link. Also forgot to mention that to change the projected image, simply replace the image in the Transmission node in the Gel material. If its too dim or too bright, just adjust the emission power of the lamp. Also, in the promos I imported the obj at 50% figure size, in case you're not getting similar results.

Excellent work on this...but I guess I'm stupid. All I get is a spotlight effect. I plugged in the image into the Transmission node on the Gel and it's completely dark. Lowering the Opacity gives the spotlight effect, but never do I get the effect you show.

Still playing with it.

Still, what you've created is GREAT!!! Thanks!

Hmm, did you load the materials from the poc file?

If so, can I see the picture you are trying to use? And the gel and lamp settings as well?

Aha! No I did not load from the POC! Duh.

Ummm...how do you do that? Via Poser or plugin?

RIght-click on 'theta-spotlight-proj [Mesh]' in the plugin and go to 'Import All Materials for this Figure/Prop' > 'Use imported Image Maps' and find and select 'theta-spotlight-proj.poc'. This should load everything correctly and will put an image called concentric3.jpg into the Gel's transmission node. Replace this with whatever you are using.

The lamp may be a bit dim, so feel free to increase the emission power to 4 or 5 thousand or so.

Could not use your file since I'm on Cinema4D - but I thought It was an awesome idea so I had to try it based on your explanation. Here's a test:
