OcDS has a habit to switch to base mesh so you have to double check that your figures are really HD therethongology wrote: I just did a quick render in iray - over 80 seconds before geometry showed up. 2 HD figures at subd 2 and an interior (2.7 million polygons), but still, in OcDS it's less than 2-3 seconds.

Check that your GPU is enabled for rendering (in Advanced tab of Render Settings view, also check the 'Optix Prime acceleration'). If you install 4.8 over 4.7 by DIM, the defaults are to use CPU only for iray.Veneris wrote:I have a GTX TITAN X and I have been tested, Octane Render for DAZ Studio is much, much, much faster than Iray, unfortunately still not working (OCDS) for Animation in DAZ Studio. And the picture quality is better in OCDS. I do not know why they say than Iray uses CUDA cores, it seems that is not, in my opinion. It is very, very, very, very slow.

You can copy your current DS installation to different directory and continue to use 4.7 from there and then install 4.8 via DIM onto the previous place. I have 3 DS installations with different plugin configurationsSpectralis wrote:Has anyone tried rendering animation with OcDS 1.2 and DS 4.8? That's my main concern about upgrading from DS 4.7. Is it possible to install 4.8 at the same time as 4.7 or is this not advisable?

I manually install all my DAZ software and content and don't use DIM. I'm using Win Pro 8.1. DS 4.7 is in the Program folder on my C:\ drive. Do you mean copy the DS 4.7 folder to another drive? If I do this will DS 4.7 still be able to access any other folders it needs?asennov wrote:You can copy your current DS installation to different directory and continue to use 4.7 from there and then install 4.8 via DIM onto the previous place. In your experience is OcDS much faster than iRAY or are reports about this because iRAY isn't set up correctly? It seems odd that NVidia would develop and DAZ would adopt an unbiased renderer that's so much less capable than the competition.

HD has to be switched on in OcDS by manually editing the subd parameter setting to increase it to 3. Unless this parameter is edited manually then the figure won't be rendered in HD by OcDS. By "editing" I don't mean just pushing the slider further over but actually editing the subd parameter so that it can be increased beyond its normal level which is 2. I think iRAY automatically makes this adjustment which might explain the big speed difference between the iRAY and OcDS renders. I've rendered HD figures in OcDS and it adds large amounts of time to a render.asennov wrote:OcDS has a habit to switch to base mesh so you have to double check that your figures are really HD therethongology wrote: I just did a quick render in iray - over 80 seconds before geometry showed up. 2 HD figures at subd 2 and an interior (2.7 million polygons), but still, in OcDS it's less than 2-3 seconds.I generally use one level of subd for most of my shots, HD only for extreme closeups, so maybe that's why I have not experienced these problems with iray, have to check it

As Asennov points out, there are a number of things to adjust in iRAY and OcDS to be able to compare them fairly.

Not even drive, just another folder. Create new folder and copy anything under the root Studio directory. 'New' Studio will remember all settings and content directories from old one (actually, they will be using the same CMS based on the same database).Spectralis wrote:Do you mean copy the DS 4.7 folder to another drive? As I wrote, generally iray is ~10% slower but there are scenes (mostly with high geometry load like 'Forest' for example) where Octane is ~30% faster in terms of 'samples per pixel per minute'Spectralis wrote: In your experience is OcDS much faster than iRAY or are reports about this because iRAY isn't set up correctly? About the NVidia strategy. IMHO, they have slightly different way of development than Otoy, iray is not their first attempt to get into renderer's business, remember Gelato. Gelato wasn't success because it was new and not tested in real world scenario (like Octane

Thanks! After I've done this I assume I need to make a new shortcut on the desktop to DS 4.7.exe in the new folder? Once I've done this can I then just install DS 4.8 over the original version of DS? The installation info for DS 4.8 says that starter essentials content needs to be updated. Will this affect the DS 4.7 copy?asennov wrote:Not even drive, just another folder. Presuming it adds the same (or equivalent) things the beta did, it's just the shader info for Iray. It'll show up in 4.7, but clearly have no purpose. I've had the beta installed since it came out with no issues (primarily still using 4.7).Spectralis wrote:Thanks! I tried DAZ Studio 4.8 and the way you said, I've already checked parameters in advanced settings. I already see that part carefully. The thing is just as slow.asennov wrote:Check that your GPU is enabled for rendering (in Advanced tab of Render Settings view, also check the 'Optix Prime acceleration'). Is your render larger than your video card's memory? My understanding is that if your run out of memory, Iray will default back to CPU only.Veneris wrote:I tried DAZ Studio 4.8 and the way you said, I've already checked parameters in advanced settings.
