Hello everyone.

Tried to use rounded edges recently and found the following issue:

This is my geometry
square.JPG
This is modo's render using rounded edges
Capture2.JPG
This is my geometry in octane:
Capture3.JPG
This is what happens when i use "load cage" so i can round it's edges:
Capture4.JPG
Hole is gone...

This is what happens when try to use rounded edges WITHOUT "load cage":
Capture5.JPG
Just some artifacts on the normals/reflections? no rounding on the edges.

Any idea?
Save me Paul :)

Cheers everyone

Round edges needs vertices to be welded at geometry edges - and the only way to do that is to tick Load Cage (which in effect loads the non-subd mesh from Modo)...so the Modo cage geometry will need to have the hole in it. If you press Tab, does the hole show?

They are all welded.
If i press tab it goes rounded and wonky(as there's no SDS sustentation edges), but the hole is still there.

Like the example shows, when i tick load cage the hole is gone. :/ weird

Hello mate, done some further research!

Ok, so, check this out:
Capture6.JPG
This is my geometry

This is what happens when i turn Load cage on:
Capture7.JPG
Again, how it shoul look like(modo render)
Capture8.JPG
Then, i decided to tesselate my mesh, and look what happens:
Capture9.JPG
It, kinda starts to work, but all wonky and jaggy.

Any idea?

Cheers!

Hi Raf - it's a little hard to tell exactly what is going on with these scenes. Would it be possible to send me the geometry which you are trying to get round edges on (particularly the cube with the hole)? Then I can check in more detail.

Two other things 1) it would be worth adjusting the ray epsilon, just to make sure it is not that causing the issues, and 2) if you also render out the wireframe pass, you can check if there is a geometry glitch (although it won't tell you for sure if the edges are welded).

I am also changing the core of the geometry extraction functions of the plugin at the moment, so all this will like change in the next month.

Hello mate

I don't remember saving the cube scene, but i'll get something ready for you to check.
Cheers!

Hey Paul, sent you a PM with the scene, scene is composed mostly by boolean modeling, so, it's going to shine with rounded edges :D.

Cheers!

Hey Raf :) I'm not exactly sure what's going on with your scene, but once you get the cage geometry loading correctly, I think you'll be disappointed.

Rounded edges work great in modo, but they just dont work very well in octane.

:(
A pal of mine was using them(rounded edges) just fine the other day(via cinamea 4D plugin)

Rafael... thats very interesting. I guess he's using very simple geometry because the problem is not plugin specific. The problem is in the octane core.

Try this to see:

1. Load octane standalone
2. Add a materials > glossy node
3. click the node to start the material ball render
4. Set rounded edge radius to 0.01 or 0.001

RESULT: It creates strange artifacts all over the ball.
