Octane is not a direct competitor to IRAY for Daz, obviously not.

But the Octane Plugin for Daz largely is a competitor to IRAY/Daz...

As I've said before, Daz users aren't really Otoys primary concern (or even secondary), we are just a fringe business. But IRAY will be great for a lot of Daz users and certainly satisfy a market of its own.

There will always be people who don't mind spending some money for the benefits the OcDS plugin will offer. I've been experimenting in IRAY, and I think it's grand. Not sure its for me though.
I agree that the DS plugin isn't OTOY's main bread and butter but I think OTOY have been rattled by this announcement by DAZ which is probably why they posted a response in this thread. I'm speculating that the iRAY/DAZ convergence may have implications for OTOY's reliance on NVidia products. There's room for more than one unbiased renderer on the market but I think OTOY were aiming for some kind of cross-app dominance. Well iClone have gone with Indigo, DAZ with NVidia so we'll see who Poser and possibly VUE choose.

The price point that OTOY have gone for seems to suit those of us at the cheaper end of the 3D market but if that's being taken over by integrated unbaised renderers from other developers then where does that leave OTOY? I think they made a mistake of pricing the DS package a bit too high which prevented many DAZ users adopting their product. Had they encouraged more users and released a working version then perhaps DAZ might have considered integrating the OTOY plugin. So I don't really believe the hyperbola from them that it's all good.

With all due respect I don't doubt your problems getting DAZ to communicate but they seem to have worked very successfully with NVidia to integrate their product into DS. The question is why hasn't this happened with our plugin which currently even v1.xx is still in beta. It's like the chicken and the egg syndrome - has the lack of communication from DAZ prevented the plugin from being finished or the other way round? When I go on the DAZ forums at least one of the moderators will try to help me pretty quickly. DAZ is a large operation so that's one reason why they can respond so quickly but part of the reason is that actively responding to the support needs of their customers is a priority for them. So I don't think a notorious lack of response from DAZ is entirely the reason v1.xx never came out of beta.

DAZ is far from perfect - the incredibly sluggish development of Cararra is one example but I don't think communication is their worst feature.

Yes I notice that also what all you described.
I have a scene with 6 million of triangles (forest and figures), and Iray give about 8 min to prepare and begin to display something. OcDs handles the scene better and faster. And even in live.

From all my years of watching the Daz scene I never challenge when people state they have communication issues with Daz, I've heard several vendors bring this up. Also you need to keep in mind Nvidia is PARTNERED with Daz for this project... Nvidia has a lot to gain from this and so does Daz. Daz never partnered with Octane....

Did you readthat Daz has plans to sell Nvidia cards? See the connection?

To be honest with you, my kind of smell a rat, if daz was secretly, doing this in the background.
All the time while T3 was developing. The plug-in. (To be honest, I can see them making his life quite difficult)

Withholding source code etc (would certainly explain why he's been having trouble)

Because let's face it daz would not exactly want a superior render engine to the own.

QFT, but not just because of this :) I haven't trusted them much ever. Their business model and what they do to maintain it...ugh. I'll just leave it alone :)

Umm... No.

t_3 has repeated verbatim what Paolo (Reality) said. Namely Daz is badly documented, and haphazardly releasing stuff. Paolo has been pants-ed a few times by Daz.

Reality 4 has a Poser front end and a Daz front end to the same database and external GUI. The Daz side has perpetual complaints, issues, and crashes. Poser side? Not so much.

Daz's total lack of docs, is a well known issue. (FYI, the Luxus developer originally worked for Daz, and even asked to help Paolo write his code.) How's your dynamic cloth plug in working? Mine crashes frequently.

Lastly, its not always easy to translate different interfaces from one to another. Daz has its own peculiarities, as does the posing art crowd. These are quite different from what the professional crowd (Octane proper) does. Paolo (Reality) fakes volumes to create the correct material properties in Lux. (I bet Octane and iRay aren't doing that.)
