I agree that the DS plugin isn't OTOY's main bread and butter but I think OTOY have been rattled by this announcement by DAZ which is probably why they posted a response in this thread. I'm speculating that the iRAY/DAZ convergence may have implications for OTOY's reliance on NVidia products. There's room for more than one unbiased renderer on the market but I think OTOY were aiming for some kind of cross-app dominance. Well iClone have gone with Indigo, DAZ with NVidia so we'll see who Poser and possibly VUE choose.larsmidnatt wrote:Octane is not a direct competitor to IRAY for Daz, obviously not.TRRazor wrote:As Otoy already said, they're not even seeing it as direct competition, to their product.
But the Octane Plugin for Daz largely is a competitor to IRAY/Daz...
As I've said before, Daz users aren't really Otoys primary concern (or even secondary), we are just a fringe business. But IRAY will be great for a lot of Daz users and certainly satisfy a market of its own.
There will always be people who don't mind spending some money for the benefits the OcDS plugin will offer. I've been experimenting in IRAY, and I think it's grand. Not sure its for me though.
The price point that OTOY have gone for seems to suit those of us at the cheaper end of the 3D market but if that's being taken over by integrated unbaised renderers from other developers then where does that leave OTOY? I think they made a mistake of pricing the DS package a bit too high which prevented many DAZ users adopting their product. Had they encouraged more users and released a working version then perhaps DAZ might have considered integrating the OTOY plugin. So I don't really believe the hyperbola from them that it's all good.
