Could somebody give me an quick overview of the correct way to do a linear workflow in maya? this concept is, embarrassingly, very new to me. I've been working in various CG industries for over 10 years and it's just something I've never come across. I"m starting to think that not working in this manner has caused issues that I've always noticed happening and just ended up fixing in photoshop as best as I can.

A few specific questions I have are below but I would like a quick overview of a photoshop->maya->photoshop workflow if somebody could help.

1. is there anything different I have to do with texture colors coming out of photoshop?
2. How should I adjust settings in maya settings or octane settings to work in this manner? Would I change things in the render globals? camera? texture?
3. When saving out final images, are there specific filetypes or settings I need to do?

Sorry if this is super basic stuff but it's really new to me and i'm still trying to fully understand the concept. thanks for any help!

how about this:

In the render globals, do I need to turn on color management and adjust the color management settings to be doing this correctly? From the videos i've watched, it seems you need to for linear workflow for maya in general but i'm not sure if that affects anything that octane is doing.

Hi,

FYI here is our pipeline in our studio.

FIrst we set the output image type to Tiff16. Very important, it will make Maya workign in the right colorspace.
Then, in the renderview, from the display menu, colormanagement setting, we set the image color profile to LinearSrgb and the output color profile to Srgb.

THat way, the colorspace is linear and consistent throught the overall production.

Tell me if this is what you are looking for.

awesome, thanks for that, i'll give it a try!

Do I need to do any adjusting at all to gamma anywhere in the scene or in the textures? Like, in the texture node, do i need to adjust the gamma slider form 2.2 down to 1? Or were the steps in your reply all that needs to be done to have a correct workflow? Thanks alot for your help!

Cool, cheers.
This solves the issue of adding an Exposure layer in Photoshop (whilst unchecking 'Tonemapping').

Oh, when you say 'color profile to Srgb', is this the 'Display Profile'?
so
Image Color Profile - Linear sRGB
Display Color Profile - sRGB

And I guess you're doing your highlight compression etc. in post?

An image is better than all explanations:

Cool cheers for that.

Interesting, I don't have the '32 bit floating point...' in my window:

Are you using Maya 2015?

Nope, Maya 2014.

Maybe you didn't set your image type to Tiff16?

Did you set the color management on in the render settings?
BEcause we always let that off
