I just installed the 1.5 plugin this morning. So far very happy with it. I was now just wondering if the version 2 upgrade makes sense for me, is it really worth $200.

Based on what I've read it looks like the only features that might be interesting is the HDRI plus sun in the same scene. I don't do animation, so motion blur is cool but will never be used. Same goes for network rendering...

How is the speed of 2.1 versus 1.5, I heard that the original 2.0 was about 20% slower than 1.5.

Is there any other reason to upgrade? that I am not seeing.

Thanks,

Nick

Hi,

Displacement maps could be interesting, thanks. Still not sure if i'd use the motion blur, but i could see it come in handy in the future.

How do you find the speed? especially indoor scenes with multiplel lights?

Another huge reason to upgrade to 2.x is the texture map limits go away. With 2.x you are no longer limited by the number of texture maps in an image, the amount of VRAM you have is your only limiting factor.

The render speed in samples/sec. definitely droped with 2, but it has been my experience that render convergence is faster (the renders clear up faster). So the loss in "render speed" hasn't been a huge factor for me. I do a lot of indoor scenes, and would hate to go back to 1.x. The loss of texture slot limits alone makes a huge difference for me. (Note: I don't have the 2.x version of the DS plugin yet, I've been using the Carrara plugin. Now that it looks like a stable version of the 2.x DS plugin has been released, I will be buying the upgrade.)

As dustrider mentioned, while the speed itself does seem to be lower overall, things do seem to clear up much faster, often leading to lower samples per pixel needed. Now that most of the issues have been ironed out, I have finally switched over to version 2.15 as my default instead of 1.2 as I finally consider it an improvement all around.

Thanks,

Made the switch this weekend.

No regrets so far!

I'm late, but I'm starting to really like 2.x at this point. Overall its way faster for me and I do appreciate the new features(sun plus hdr is really neat, displacement will be awesome). The new plugin specific features are nice too (but I guess they are also being added to 1.x too).
