It looks like I would have to role back from Yosemite to Mavericks as the moded wed Driver for nvidia is ONLY mavericks 10.93 and 10.94

I'll work on that and see how it goes. I am not sure how much that will effect all the apps I have now so I am hesitant to do that just yet.

But I will get there eventually.

You sent a link showing how you can turn a molex into a barrel to charge the PCI slot ... why not use the barrel that comes with the Extender?

Is there a reason not to? Is it not powerful enough etc?

Thanks Again you are a great rersource and it seems one of the few that have got this working :>)

You can try this for Yosemite. They show how to edit the web installer files so that you can install the drivers on a macbook pro:

Molex to barrel - is if you want to put the GPU straight in to the AKiTiO and not use the riser:

Thanks man! Im just trying to help my Octane Render people.
Let me know if it works for you.

You be the man
I'll give it a try.

When I start being a pain in the ass let me know.

I took the card out of the case so that I would not have to use an extender. But on the card there is the power input that is charged by the barrel power supply. Why would I want to power the card with a molex when the barrel has its own power supply that ships with the extender box?

Am I missing something?

I am powering the card with an external power supply are you just thinking that by using the molex you can hook everything into the one power supply?

Also if the Macbook or MacPro desktop has no nvidia cards is this likely to work?

Thanks again Jose

OK no problem :)

Yes, use the PSU for GPU and AKiTiO.

AKiTiO PSU doesn't have the power you need for a GPU. Is not made for it.

No idea about not having Nvidia cards.

Hey guys, didn't see this thread had a convo going. I came here to post this video. Anything I can help with? https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=p ... BJyf6TSW7M

EDIT: Haha, this video IS jose's video. Amazing job with this.

Hey guys, Just read through the convo. I'm running a Titan Z with no powered riser, but I am using the molex to barrel plug for the Akitio. There is more detail on my setup here:

http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu- ... -10-a.html

I also just recently updated to Yosemite. The setup actually runs smoother in Yosemite but is more finicky to get the driver running correctly.

I'm running x2 GTX780s and the fan noise brings me back to my Powermac Quad G5 days... And let's not even talk about the heat!
Just what Jose said. It's loud haha, but so worth it.

On the eGPU forums at techinferno, people talk about the powered risers a lot and I've done some research. My research reflects what jose says. To power a bigger card like a Titan, you need to get more power into the Akitio. You can do that by either using a powered riser or assembling a molex to barrel plug to run from your PSU. I'm using a 750 Watt Corsair PSU, btw. The power supply that comes with the Akitio gives you about 60 watts I think. Running the moles to barrel plug from the PSU brings in about 100 watts I think. It definitely helps out. I am using the barrel plug route because it's nice to be able to just put the card straight into the bent open Akitio.

Also, if you make a barrel plug, just to an electronics store and purchase any molex adapter so you can cut it for the molex end, and buy a barrel plug with a 2.5 interior and a 5.5 exterior. I think that's millimeters. Take the molex adapter and cut it, then remove the red wire completely, and the black wire that was beside it, leaving 1 yellow wire and 1 black wire. The yellow wire is your 12v and the black wire is the ground. On the barrel plug, the outside is the ground and the inside is your power so your black wire connects to the outer contact and the yellow wire connects to the inner contact. This will be very simple when you have the parts in front of you. All you really need is some electrical tape (I used shrink tubing for a nicer setup, you can use a hair dryer for this if you buy some), some thin needle nose pliers for wrapping the wire ends around the contacts on the barrel plug, and some wire strippers for stripping the wire sleeving on the molex adapter you buy.

How are you guys managing the heat? My cards get so hot when rendering that it worries me to leave them unattended!

jose, I saw you are having some problems with crashes when u boot with a Titan Z? Are you using Mavericks? When I upgraded to Yosemite, I was able to install the newer Nvidia drivers and it solved my issues with any crashes I think. I was, however, able to use my Titan Z in Mavericks, but I had a couple crashes and decided it was time to upgrade to try the new drivers.

I am trying to figure out why my Titan Z is booting like this, as 2 cards but only 1 that labeled with the driver. Anyone have a clue?
